How it works

The path we'll take to help you live well.

How It Works | OLIO

Financial planning isn't a meeting. It isn't a binder. And it's not a one-time set of recommendations. It's an ongoing partnership. Built to help you make thoughtful decisions, feel more confident about your future, and move through life with clarity around money.

Here's what working together actually feels like.

Meet OLIO

Every relationship starts with a conversation. We learn what brought you here, what you want help with, and what success would look like.

You'll get a clear picture of how we work and what partnership looks like. If we're a fit, we move forward together. If not, we'll point you to someone better aligned.

FAQs

A few answers before we get started.

Financial planning should feel clear, personal, and useful. These answers are here to help you understand how OLIO works, what to expect, and whether we may be the right fit.

Working With OLIO

Where do you work?

We work with clients across the United States through in-person meetings, email, phone, and video. Our offices are located just outside Washington, DC in Tysons Corner, Virginia, and in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Who are your clients?

We work with a wide range of clients, from recent college graduates to retirees. Our clients include educators, small business owners, executives, creatives, government contractors, and families navigating big life decisions. Because our fees are not based on how much money you have, we can focus on fit, complexity, and the value of the work.

Who would I work with?

You work with a team, not just one person. We believe clients are better served when multiple people understand their situation. That also means if someone is out sick, on vacation, or watching their kid’s soccer game, your question can still be answered.

Pricing And Fees

When and how do I pay you?

Our first two meetings are free. We want to get to know each other and make sure the relationship is a good fit. If you decide to move forward, we charge quarterly. You can pay electronically, by check, or directly from an investment account we manage.

How do you charge for your services?

We charge flat fees based on the services we provide. We do not charge commissions, and we do not charge a percentage of your investment accounts. If your planning needs change over time, your fee can change too. Our fee is simple. It is what you pay us.

Do you sell insurance or investment products?

No. If we believe you need insurance or another financial product, we’ll advise you on what to consider and where you can buy it. We do not sell insurance policies or investment products, and we do not receive commissions or kickbacks from our recommendations.

Client Fit

How do you know if a client is a good fit?

We start with one or two introductory meetings at no cost to you. Depending on your needs, we may begin with a small project or move into an ongoing relationship. The goal is to understand where we can be useful now and where we may continue to add value over time.

Do I need to bring anything to our first meeting?

No. The first meeting is about getting to know you, what you are hoping to accomplish, and what questions are on your mind. If we continue forward, we’ll guide you through what we need and when.

Planning And Advice

Are you a fiduciary? Will you do what is in my best interest?

Yes. We follow a fiduciary standard, which means we put your interests first. We believe that standard should apply to financial advice the same way it applies when you expect a doctor or attorney to act in your best interest.

Are you an investment advisory firm?

We are a financial planning firm first. Investments matter, but they are only one part of your financial life. Our work is designed to connect your investments, taxes, insurance, estate planning, cash flow, and life decisions into one coordinated plan.

Who are your competitors?

To replicate most of our services, you would likely need some combination of an investment advisory firm, financial planning firm, accountant, estate attorney, insurance professional, and sometimes even real estate guidance. We are not attorneys and we do not file tax returns, but we help coordinate the moving pieces so your decisions are not happening in isolation.

Still Have Questions?

That is exactly what the first conversation is for.

No pressure. No hard sell. Just a chance to talk through where you are, where you want to go, and whether we are the right team to help.
